Soccer Manager Game Day Must Haves

Soccer Manager

Soccer season is fast approaching and as a team manager there are a number of soccer manager game day must have items in your bag. The job of the soccer team manager is admin intensive job and being prepared is key to a successful game day. Below is a non-exhaustive list of things managers or coaches should bring to the field and have at the ready. Every item on this list is something that I have needed at one time or another.

First Aid Kit / Ice Packs

The right first aid kit is key for any soccer manager. You will always need it when you don’t have it, so I just keep one in each training bag I have. Typically, I buy a full kit every year or so and just replace bandaids and ice packs. Here are a couple of medical kits that fit the needs of most soccer teams.

Also, always have extra large bandaids as those are key to stop the bleeding from scraped knees.

As players get older, you can never have enough ice packs. Seems like every game I am using 2-3 packs during the game to handle the bumps and bruises. At the younger ages, Ice Packs are often a cure all for any rough and tumble situation that occurs on the field. As a team manager, having enough ice packs is key to success.

Tape – Duct and Athletic

At the top of the list for any soccer team manager must have is Duct Tape. This stuff is an absolute life saver. I have used it to fix shoes, make numbers on jerseys, as a shoe lace, to patch a hole in ripped shorts, fix a bench, and put a broken white board back together. Never go anywhere without this in your bag. I prefer the black tape, but you can get any color.

While you are shopping for tape, you can never have enough athletic tape. This stuff is great for any injury, wrapping ankles, and making numbers on jerseys as well. So always have a roll or two in your bag, or one white roll and one black roll.

Zip Ties

Zip ties are a must for the manager bag. If nothing else, you can repair a poor net and make the goal playable. Very important if you are the home team. So throw a few of these in the bag as you just never know when you will need them.

Ball Pump

Everyone has had that situation, you are the home team and your game balls are a little under inflated. The last thing you want to stress about is trying to find a pump to inflate the balls. So a small portable pump is a key for the managers bag.

Dry Erase Markers and Sharpies

Dry erase markers are vitally important to pre-game and half time talks. Unfortunately these seem to have legs. of their own and they are always walking off. So having a couple of extra markers in the bag is key.

Sharpies are just one of those things that you should always have in your kit.

Shoe Goo

I have had to use Shoe Goo at tournaments on multiple occasions. It can usually save you between games or even in a pinch at the start of the game, put some shoe goo in there and then wrap in duct tape… amazing what kids can play in.

Extra Goalie Gloves

Having an extra set of goalie gloves comes in handy. You never know when you are going to need these and typically, when you need them, you really need them. So having an extra set is always a good idea.

Suckers for Those Loud Parents

Many years ago I learned that it is very difficult to yell with a sucker in your mouth. So I always have a few of these in the bag. And sometimes, I have found that I need them myself when coaching a game and it might be better to just be quiet.
