Five Backyard Games for Labor Day

Washer Toss Tournament

#1 Labor Day Game Cornhole

Cornhole has really taken off in recent times, it is on ESPN, has a website, and league play. This is a staple for any Labor Day game event, celebration, or family get together. There are tons of places to purchase corn hole boards and supplies, but not all have the same quality of boards and bags. Boards last for a long time, as long as they don’t get wet, but the bags wear out and those need to be replaced regularly. Cornhole is good in a tournament format or just pick up games. Its perfect for Labor Day.

#2 Washer Toss

Washer Toss is an absolute favorite for tailgating and backyard get togethers. I really love that you can make your own boxes relatively cheaply and also customize your washers any way you want. Washer Toss is the perfect game for running tournaments, see our post here or just playing some pick up games. There are lots of washer toss sets for sale on Amazon, but I really enjoy making the boxes myself. You can find instructions here. Start a new Labor Day game tradition with a family washer toss tournament.

#3 Kubb

If you have never played Kubb – you need to add it to the yard game collection. This is a classic Viking game that involves teamwork, hand eye coordination and a little bit of luck. There are a number of variations of the game, so make sure the house rules are clear before you get started. The games take a while to play, so not the best candidate for a tournament, unless you have a lot of space and a large number of Kubb sets. You could DIY one of these yourself, but it is likely not cost effective.

#4 Beer Pong

A college favorite, beer pong played with water instead of beer can be something everyone can play. To play this outside you need good weather, but I keep it in reserve in case we have bad weather on Labor Day. It is the easy alternative weather plan for Labor Day as you can play inside; you just need some pingpong balls and solo cups. They have even created a jumbo sized version to play outside, but I prefer the normal game.

#5 Labor Day Game Ladder Toss

Ladder Toss is a great game for the backyard, as long as there are no windows close by. The two balls connected by a string can go just about anywhere with new or inexperienced players. That being said it is a fan favorite of the kids and provides a lot of entertainment. With this game, you really do get what you pay for though, so choose wisely when you purchase, as not all games are created equal. If you are looking for a project this is a fun one to make with the kids, but you will likely spend more making it than you would have just buying one on Amazon.
